Lockport is a city in the central region of Illinois, United States. The population was 27,402 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Addison County and home to five universities: Northwestern University, US Military Academy, Illinois State University, Purdue Pharma (now Eli Lilly and Company), and Lockport-based Olivetti. Lockport was founded in 1825 by John Lock and his wife, Mary. The town became a small community of about seventy-five people when it was platted on the east bank of the Chicago River. In 1854, the city of Chicago annexed Lockport and renamed it "Chicago". The first commercial transaction in Lockport occurred when Isaac Decatur bought two barrels of whiskey from James Caldwell for $5. On July 4, 1826, three men representing the Illinois Wesleyan Methodist Church met at the home of John Ziegler to purchase property for a churchyard. They paid cash and received an equal amount in goods in return. In 1827, lockers were imported into Lockport from England to be stored there until some local farmers could build a barn to hold them. At that time,lockers were not subject to State taxation because they were considered personal property rather than real estate. A post office called Lockport was established in 1830; its first postmaster was James Caldwell. The town lost its charter as a village in 1835 but regained it upon Chicago's incorporation as a city under the name of Chicago (though Lockport remained an unincorporated community). The first store built in Lockport was operated by Nicholas Bemis and opened on Main Street in 1840. In 1850, Fenton & Hetherington erected a shop on Prairie Avenue which served as the town's only business center until1875 when Gossett Bros., hardware dealers, began selling groceries from their store on Delaware Avenue near current day Whitehall Road . In 1865-1866 A&P grocery store was built with room for 10 storefronts along one side of Elm Street between Dearborn Ave./Lake Shore Drive and what is now Northwestern Ave./Whitehall Rd.. It continued operation until 1978 when it closed due to various factors including competition from other stores within walking distance such as Sears Roebuck & Co.'s Supervalu supermarket directly across Elm Street . One important event during this time period associated with Lockport was the arrival of America's first steamboat -the sidewinder –on August 12th 1861 while anchored off shore at Cookstown Marine Park just north of downtown Lockport

Downtown growth finally resumed after World War II when new businesses established themselves in what had once been lockPORT's deprecated waterfront district called "The Landing". This area now includes much newer retail buildings along with some significant cultural attractions like The Tavern at Lockport Pointe which overlooks locks on both sides of navigation river - one popular attraction for tourists during summer months
