Lockport is a city in the U.S. state of Illinois, on the Fox River. The population was 25,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is bordered by Waterford to the east, Aurora to the north, Danville to the west and Lakewood to the south. The first permanent settler in what would become Lockport was Nicholas Joliot in 1795. Joliot founded a trading post on the Fox River about two miles (3 km) north of present-day Lockport. The village of Lockport was platted in 1812 by John Pomeroy and named for John LOCKETT, an English officer who had been aide-de-camp to General James HAWKINS during his invasion of Mexico City in 1810. In 1825, American politician Solomon LINCOLN selected Lockport as one of four sites for a military fortification called Fort Dearborn; however, it never materialized because of lack of funds. In 1830, though still unbuilt, Fort Dearborn was transferred from its original site near Chicago to what is now its current location just east of downtown Lockport on Randolph Street between First and Second Avenues (now State Street). Fort Dearborn served as a stopover onenumberline between Chicago and Rockford until it burned down in 1886 while being used as a storage depot by railroad magnate Isaac NEWTON COX. lock port map
