Lockport is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 382 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Lockport was platted on October 14, 1836 by Captain John A. Lamont and his son-in-law, Amos Carlin; it became a town on November 1, 1837. On September 13, 1850, the village of Lockport incorporated as a village under its own charter; on December 3, 1852 it became an unincorporated community governed by its own trustees appointed by the Village Council. In 1902–1903 the Works Progress Administration (WPA) built a dam across Chicago River to provide power for electric lights in Lockport and other villages within Cook County. In 1935–1936 Lockport was one of six communities in Cook County to receive floodlights from General Electric as part of Project Havasu Arrow. The Village Board approved candidates for election to fill two open seats on theTrusteeship Committee effective January 1st through December 31st each year beginning with 2008 (and until such time that someone new becomes elected). These elections are held every four years and are open to residents of all households who live within reach of either primary or general election ballots; no property qualification is required. Elections are generally held during late summer or early fall so that citizens can have their voices heard about matters that affect them directly rather than being affected indirectly byelected officials from other municipalities or counties which may be located some miles away or downwind in terms of political affiliation or economic development opportunities
