Lisle, Illinois is an unincorporated community in Cook County, Illinois, United States. It is located on the west bank of the Chicago River. The population was 1,827 at the 2000 census. Lisle was first settled by German immigrants in 1839. The village was named after Lisle, a town in Germany that had been founded two years earlier by Gottlieb Lisle and his wife Anna Maria Meyerhoffer. The Lisles were originally farmers, but they soon developed a grain business supplying local markets with flour and corn. In 1881, they moved to what is now Lincoln Park and began developing their land into a large open-air shopping center that became one of the leading commercial areas in Chicago. In 1916, John Daugherty opened the first grocery store in Lisle and it has been run by his family ever since. Other early retail tenants included Jiffy Lube (1925), Sears Roebuck & Co.(1928), Kress Shoes (1929), Western Electric (1931), Pabst Blue Ribbon beer (1941) and Wrigley's candy bars (1964). The shopping center continued to grow even as new businesses cropped up throughout the 20th century: Uptown Clothing Store(1971), Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company(1972), Applebees Restaurants(1981), Sears Craftsman(1984) and Joann's maternity clothing chain(1996). Today, Lisle remains a vibrant cultural center with several major retailers including AMC theatres (2007-present) and Regal Cinemas (2000-2013). The community experienced significant redevelopment following its incorporation into the city of Chicago in 1973; much of which took place within or near downtown Lisle limits. One key initiative was the construction of River North Station on tracks nearby which Eventually served as both an air rights connection for adjacent skyscrapers on Michigan Avenue as well as providing employment for many residents during construction season. This area has also seen significant redevelopment recentelty - most notably Hennepin Community College's attached campus which opened in 2006 - bringing more than 3,000 jobs to town over that time period alone!
Lisle is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 21,711 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Cook County by population. Lisle was one of the first cities in Illinois to be organized. Lisle's history dates back to 1824 when two Revolutionary War veterans, John Smedley and Samuel Morse, founded the town of Lisle on the banks of the Black River after their unit was disbanded near Fort Dearborn. In 1827, Andrew Johnson became President of America and ordered all military commanders to disband their units; as a result, Lisle had no military presence until 1828 when it received its charter from state governor James K. Polk. In 1830, Amos Kendall laid out a town square on East State Street between First and Second Streets and named it Lisle after his home state of New York; however, due to Indian raids during that year there were few settlers in Liza-lessee so Kendall changed his name to Bradford in order to avoid any confusion with other towns in that area with similar names (e.g., Eanesville). The original post office building still stands on South Third Street across from City Hall; it served as an hosiery store for many years before being sold to the Chicago Board of Trade in 1922 and converted into a movie theater. In 1835–36 Samuel Morse laid out a town block on North Green Street between West State Street and South State Street which he called "Morseville". However because numerous farmers living near North GreenStreet wanted their land given back they formed a group known as "The Lacemakers" who opposed Morse's development; this opposition led directly to Morses death at age 36 while surveying his new town site. When news reached America that Morses death had caused some peopleto associateto him they began calling themselves "Morseites".
