The town has been called "the little village of the west" because it is located on West Roosevelt Road near the then-western edge of Chicago. At one time, Lindenhurst had a post office that served both towns; however, this office closed in 1916. Lindenhurst originally consisted of only a few homes and businesses; however, over time its downtown grew to include several blocks of buildings including a jail, schoolhouse and grocery store/butcher shop/market place. In 1962, the city annexed portions of neighbouring Glenview Heights and Northbrook Township to form Lindenhurst City Limits; consequently, much of what is now central Lindenhurst (including most of downtown) was never officially incorporated into the city as part of its growth story - instead it remained an annexe to neighboring Glenview Heights or Northbrook Township residents who continue to identify primarily with those communities today. Today, many people in Lindenhurst still consider themselves partof their respective communities - even if they live just outside the boundaries of their original neighbourhoods or townships - due to continued social integration over time within these two larger municipalities which have since become more diverse than ever before despite some significant challenges (see below). The mix continues to be particularly Mutual Aid-based with small groups always looking out for each other during times Of Economic Downturns or Natural Disasters such as flash flooding etc., as well as special events like carnivals or harvest festivals which bring many people together from near and far for some great food & fun!
