The first white person to live in Lindenhurst was John Laughlin in 1827. He set up a sawmill and gristmill on Saugus Creek and named it after his home village of Louth in England. In 1892, James W. Haggerty founded the J&J Grain Elevator Company here which became one of the largest grain elevator companies in America. The company closed its doors in 1982 but left an important legacy: It donated land to Stritch University for use as a research campus. In 1907, the Town Board voted to rename Lindenhurst "Hagraven" after General John A. Hagraven who had served as Commandant of the 4th Infantry Regiment during World War I and then as Mayor of Joliet from 1919-21; he also chaired the McCormick Manufacturing Company's board of directors from 1922-29 In 1945, Jens Christensen opened what would become known as "The Mercurius". As one of America's first drive-in restaurants, The Mercurius became an historic landmark serving upiterranean food until it closed its doors in 1984 due to lack of business income In 1957, Drs Julius Nygren and Olaus Magnus opened their hospital which would become one of McLean County's most popular tourist destinations Lindenhust High School (LHS) is the only high school located within Lindenhurst Township; all other public schools are located within Cook County or Springfield Township
