Lindenhurst, Illinois is a small town in southern Illinois that is known for its apple orchards and vineyards. The community was founded in 1887 by John Lindenhurst and his wife, Emma. The Lindenhurst family operated the businesses until they sold them to the Richards family in 1978. Today, the Richards family operates the businesses as a cooperative. John Lindenhurst was born in 1838 in what is now Erie County, Pennsylvania. He moved with his parents to western Illinois when he was just three years old. John worked on his father's farm before going into business himself with his brother Harry and their father-in-law, Abram Richards. In 1857, John married Emma Richards and started operating the businesses together. They would run the stores for many years before selling them to Abram Richards' son Samuel in 1978. The Apple Orchard: One of Lindenhurst's most popular attractions are its apples! Lindenhurst, Illinois is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. It is located on the east bank of the DuPage River. The population was 2,531 at the 2010 census. Lindenhurst was founded in 1854 by Germans who had come to the area from Germany and Austria. The first shop in Lindenhurst was a millinery store run by Mrs. Lena Heigl and her daughter Elsie Heigl. The Heigls were later joined by their cousin Anna Wagner and her husband Gustavus Wagner as owners of a grocery store which became one of the most successful businesses in town. In 1916 Mrs. Wagner donated land to make way for a municipal park that still exists today known as Wagner Park after her husband's death in 1928. In 1938 Mayor George Jorgensen dedicated Lindenhurst High School which became one of the largest high schools in Cook County and Regency College which opened nearby in 1945 provides education for about 450 students grades 9-12 In 1961 Mayor John Fritchey dedicated Lindenhurst Junior High School which became one of the smallest high schools in Cook County with only 256 students but has since been enlarged with an addition to the north wing (now called North Wing) that now provides classrooms for over 500 students grades 7-12 It is interesting to note that both Valdosta Junior High School (to the south) and Chicago Heights Jr./Sr.'s HS (to the north) are also small high schools but have since been enlarged with additional classrooms providing opportunity for more than 1,000 students grades 7-12
