The Coast Guard has been providing service at the Lindenhurst Pier for over a century. On September 11, 1915, the first post office on the pier was opened. The Coast Guard has responded to many tragedies and emergencies during that time. One of the most famous incidents occurred when Officer John F. Kennedy was fatally shot while protecting citizens from a terrorist attack on Dealey Plaza in Dallas, Texas on November 16, 1963. That year, the Coast Guard donated two lifeboats to help with the response to that tragedy. In 1969, one of the original Life Saving Trusty boats was retired and given to the Lindenhurst Pier Museum as a gift from then-Mayor Ray Nagin. In 2006, another old Life Saving Trusty boat was given to Lindenhurst by Alderman Tom Turner as part of Mayor Turner's campaign for re-election. That boat is currently used as a storage vessel at homeport in Middletown Township and is not open to visitors anymore. Today, there are three Coast Guard stations located in Illinois: Atchison (Kansas), Rockford (Illinois) and Joliet (Illinois). Each station provides escorts for commercial vessels through its marine patrol capabilities;mails boats using helicopter services;and responds to reports ofUGSAPP coastal emergencies such as hurricanes or earthquakes

The Lindenhurst Coast Guard Station was established in 1907. The station was originally located on the shores of Lake Michigan and was manned by five volunteers. In 1912, the station became a municipally funded agency and an office was added to the structure. In 1922, a new building was constructed and the name changed to the present day Lindenhurst Coast Guard Station. In 1935, the Coast Guard purchased land at Great Lakes Beach for use as their Station. The first Officers’ Quarters were built on this property in 1937. The current Officers’ quarters were built in 1978. On July 1st, 1992, the Lindenhurst Coast Guard Station opened its doors to public access.
Lindenhurst is a village in Johnson County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,591 at the 2010 census. Lindenhurst is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It is located on the west side of the Quad Cities River. Lindenhurst was first settled by German immigrants in 1847 and named "Lenzendorf". The name derived from a Lutheran pastor who ministered there. In 1868, the village became part of Johnson County after it was split from Kankakee County. The original post office opened in 1868 and closed in 1918 due to lack of mail service. In 1927, Lindenhurst incorporated as a Village and adopted its current Name on February 3, 1928. The Village has been headquartered at 611 S Apple Rd since that time which includes their Police Department SWAT Team also housed here until they relocated to their new facility just north of town on May 7th 2014 when they purchased property adjacent to St Francis Catholic Church (renamed Holy Rosary) which will house all their needs for police services including an ambulance with medical capabilities as well as training facilities for officers if needed during incidents or emergencies within or near town while also providing housing for up to 60officers should need it over night while still providing access to public transportation into town (Kankakee Transit Center). In addition to all this; they have built themselves an infrastructure such as water systems, sewers and power lines that are not found anywhere else in Johnson County...all without raising any money! They do this through voluntary donations from individuals and businesses within the Village....and more importantly; through giving back to our community through special events such as golf tournaments/fundraisers/ Christmas receptions etc., things that help bring people together so we can show our support for one another!
