Phelps and Sons established a store in what is now Lincolnwood, which was one of the first such establishments in what is now Chicago.[1] In 1865, Rufus King founded King's Marine Supply Company in Lincolnwood, which became one of the largest marine gift stores in North America. In 1923, Dickenson Brothers opened its flagship store in Lincolnwood – this would be later known as Dickenson's Department Store – which remains one of the most popular retail locations for marine gifts today. In 1969, J&R Wagon Wheel Co., Inc., a leading retailer ofmarine gifts and collectibles began operations in Lincolnwood; it would remain an important part of the community until it closed its doors in 2006. In 1881, Abraham Lincoln purchased 320 acres (120 ha) of land northwest of Chicago for $10,000 from Nathan Bedford Forrest Jr., one of the largest donors to Republican politics during the 1880s campaign season. The site would eventually become known as Lincolnwood after Abraham Lincoln's funeral procession passed through it on April 12, 1865 – three days after his assassination by John F Kennedy – stopped at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Hollywood Hills. After Abe's death, his widow Mary Todd Lincoln donated additional acreage between Bellefontaine Road (now Belmont Road) and Garfield Boulevard (now Devon Drive) to build an Enderlin House according to plans drawn up by her husband's friend Major General Lewis Cassadine*. On November 6th 1886*, Mrs. Abraham Lincoln presented her gift - 527 acres (241 ha) - totalling 4500 acres (186 km2), or about 93% of what would become modern day Lincolnwood Township*.* *This large gift was not realized until 1893 when Mrs. Abraham Lincoln gave another donation totaling 7200 acres (300 km2).
