It is bordered by Skokie to the south, Mayfair to the east, and Winnetka to the north. The first documented settlement in what would become Lincolnwood was made on March 9, 1837 by two brothers named Levi and Isaac Hale, who were looking for land to purchase from their father-in-law. The hale's initial investment turned out not to be successful so they abandoned their plans and returned home. However, within a few years they had founded another small community called Cedar Grove which still exists today as a neighborhood outside of Chicago. In 1841 Lincolnwood was incorporated as a village with a population of just under 100 people. This was due largely to efforts of Mayor John Prentice and his assistant John Hoeffer who pushed for formation of an municipality due to concerns about overcrowding in Cottage Grove and Skokie which at that time also constituted part of Cook County. Lincolnwood experienced its most dramatic growth during World War II when it reached its peak population with over 1,500 residents living in 50 homes on five streets. Unfortunately this prosperity did not last long because following the war there were significant reductions in crime and infrastructure improvements which led to an overall decline in population throughout the 1960s through 1990s while concurrently increasing affluence within the town itself caused street homelessness increase dramatically until finally being solved by closing some streets off from traffic altogether effective 2006). At present day there are only 350 residents living permanently or temporarily within Lincolnwood limits making it one of America’s smallest towns by total population size however this does not mean that life is easy for those who call this place home; many challenges remain such as high levels of poverty, low median household income & unemployment rates well above average for Cook County & nearby cities combined (see table below).
