The Lincolnwood-based 1st Air Depot was one of the first military airfields in the United States and it soon became an important refueling and storage base for the bomber force. In 1957, General Curtis LeMay commissioned the installation of a nuclear reactor at the airport which later became known as “LeMay AAF”. Since then, Lincolnwood has been home to numerous USAF units and facilities such as: The 3d Bomb Wing (1952-1957), 4th Bomb Wing (1973-1981), 5th Bomb Wing (1991-1996), 6th Bomb Wing (2002-2006) and 7th Bomb Wing (2007-present). Additionally, there is currently an active US Army unit stationed at Lincolnwood – The 173d Infantry Brigade Combat Team.
