The Lincoln National Guard was organized on December 15, 1861, in preparation for the Civil War. The first commander of the Lincoln National Guard was Colonel Abraham Lincoln. When President Abraham Lincoln announced his decision to call off the Civil War on April 12, 1865, most of these troops had already surrendered or been disbanded. However, a few hundred soldiers from Illinois’ 3rd Regiment remained unofficially active until 1865 when they were reactivated as part of General George Meade’s 1st Brigade United States Army Corps under Lieutenant-General Ulysses S. Grant at Fort Donelson in Tennessee. After that battle, many of these men returned home to serve their states again while others continued fighting in other theaters until finally being discharged on July 14th, 1865. During their time with the Lincoln National Guard they participated in many battles including Vicksburg (1863), Gettysburg (1862), Chickamauga (1864), Missionary Ridge (1865) and Petersburg (1904). Some members also attained distinction such as becoming commanders or lieutenant colonel status within their unit during their brief time with military service despite never having received any formal training for those positions. These accomplishments are reflective of how important national guard service was to both Abraham Lincoln and the people of Illinois after its creation nearly two years earlier!
