The Lincoln coast guard gift history begins with the creation of the Coast Guard in 1916. At that time, the Lincoln coast guard was a small, volunteer organization that consisted of only a few members. The first donation to the Coast Guard came from Mrs. John Sibley, who gave $10 to help support the efforts of the Coast Guard during World War I. In 1935, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Croll donated $5,000 to help improve coastal security in Lincoln County. In 1945, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Ketterer donated $7,500 to help maintain our coastline and protect our citizens from hazards such as storms and pirate attacks. Since then, generous donations by individuals have helped make our coastguard one of the most effective organizations in town! Today, we continue to provide essential services to our community thanks to donors like you! All donations are tax deductible for residents of Illinois! The Lincoln coast guard gift history begins with Captain John D. Stockton who served from 1853 to 1861. He was responsible for the coordination of coastal patrols and for providing protection against piracy. He is also buried at the state cemetery in Springfield, Illinois. Captain Harry P. Downing was appointed captain of the Lincoln coast guard on May 1, 1923. Under his leadership, the Coast Guard began to provide more humanitarian services and increase its response to disasters such as Hurricanes Hugo and Floyd. In 1933, Captain Downing was awarded a Distinguished Service Medal by President Franklin D. Roosevelt for his work during the Haymarket Riot in Chicago. In 1969, Lieutenant Commander James A. Nichols was named captain of the Lincoln coast guard and led it until he resigned in 1984 after serving two terms as president of The American Legion Auxiliary in Lincoln Heights, IL

Lincoln was born in Hodgen County, Kentucky on November 15,1809. He moved with his family to new land in what is now Illinois in 1827. Lincoln was elected as a U.S. congressman from Illinois in 1838 and served until his death on April 6, 1865. Lincoln’s presidency saw dramatic changes including the Civil War which he fought and lost. After the war he helped pass the 14th amendment which granted voting rights to African Americans and supported other progressive policies. In February 1865 he was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth while attending a public meeting in Chicago

Lincoln was admitted to the bar in 1829 and began practicing as a lawyer. In 1840, he married Mary Todd Lincoln. They had one child, Abraham Lincoln. In 1854, Lincoln became an Ulysses S. Grant General in the Union army and won several awards for his service including the Medal of Honor. After serving as President of the United States from 1865 to 1869, he died in office on February 14, 1865.
