The first Lincoln regiment was organized on April 12, 1861. The regiment's first battle was at Fort Donelson on July 8, 1861. On November 3, 1861 the regiment fought in the Battle of Pea Ridge. On December 6, 1861 the unit participated in the Battle of Harpers Ferry. On January 15, 1862 the regiment joined General Ulysses S. Grant's army and fought in the Battle of Antietam. The next day they were involved in a skirmish with Confederate forces near Sharpsburg. After two days of fighting they reached Fredericksburg where they lost one captain and four privates killed and twenty-nine wounded. On February 14th they helped to break through Confederate lines at Chancellorsville and took part in that particular campaign as well as other engagements during 1862-1863 including Gettysburg where their colonel was among those killed or mortally wounded (the only Lincoln officer to be killed during this period). In 1864 they served under General Philip Sheridan along with other units participating in action at Coldwater Creek, West Virginia; Bristoe Station; Monocacy; Shenandoah Valley; Winchester and Appomattox Court House leading up to the surrender of Johnston at Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865
