In 1865, the United States Army was deployed in Lincoln, Illinois. The army's deployment was in support of the Union cause during the American Civil War. At that time, there were only three infantry regiments and one artillery regiment stationed in Lincoln. However, due to the large number of soldiers stationed in and around Lincoln, the army soon grew to include over a hundred companies and battalions. The first unit deployments from the Illinois National Guard occurred on November 15th when Company C of the 9th Infantry Regiment arrived from Rockford, Illinois. Company D also arrived from Rockford that day; however, they did not march with Company C until after Thanksgiving Day. On December 12th 1862, Company K of the 2nd Infantry Regiment arrived from Jacksonville Heights (now Jacksonville). This company eventually served as Companies A-G of 1st Brigade under General Ulysses S. Grant’s command during his tenure as Commander-in-Chief of The Union Army during the war. At some point between late 1863 and early 1864, all five infantry regiment brigades were reorganized into two divisions under General Nathaniel Prentice Johnson’s command (1st Brigade/5th Infantry Division/1st Cavalry Division) which became known as “the Regular Army” because it was composed primarily of regular troops without any National Guard units attached thereto. Each brigade consisted of four regiments: two rifle companies (A & B), one artillery battalion (C), and one cavalry squadron (D). Each regiment had a garrison strength of about 7500 men excluding their own stores and ammunition trains which totaled approximately 120 wagons or 40000 rounds per minute! Additionally each brigade typically fielded ten batteries including six field guns and four howitzers with a total firepower totaling 2600 cannons! In addition to its normal duties providing security for Springfield Armory Arsenal Generals Richard Butler and George Meade while they devoted themselves to manufacturing munitions for use by both armies Johnson also conducted experiments at various arsenals such as Harper's Ferry where he tested different arms projectiles including gold coated balls filled with lead shot then detonated at high altitude resulting in injury or death to many people! These military deployments gave residents near downtown Lincoln an excellent opportunity to see active duty troops through windows or even outside on parade grounds!
