Libertyville is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 31,754 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cook County. The first settler in Libertyville was John Richardson who arrived in 1827. In 1839, Isaac Beal settled here and founded Beal's Store which still stands on Main Street. The first post office in Libertyville was established in 1846. In 1849, David Dixon moved to Libertyville from Knox County and built the first store and home here which still stands today on First Avenue West. He became one of the earliest settlers of the area now known as Libertyville. He helped start the town's Methodist Church and donated land for its early school buildings. Dixon also served as Township Clerk for many years before retiring age 72 in 1936. In 1865, Jno Hines came to Libertyville from Harvey County and bought a tract of land south of First Avenue West from David Dixon; he named it Hines Park after his father-in-law Jno Richardson who had died two years earlier while serving as superintendent of schools for Harvey County. Here he started a grocery store that became one of the most popular stores in town until it closed its doors in 1984 due to illness or bankruptcy reasons; later reopened by his son Jno Hines III under new management but ceasing operations again by 2009 due to financial difficulties.).
