As the world's largest Marine mammal research center, The Illinois State University in Libertyville has been providing students and professionals with an opportunity to study marine mammals since 1901. The university has a rich maritime history dating back to 1875 when it was established as the Illinois Maritime School. During World War I, the school operated a submarine base in Rock Island Harbor; during World War II, it developed naval minesweepers and destroyer boats; and during the Korean War, it furnished marines for service in South Korea. In 1978, The Illinois State University became a part of the newly created Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT). In that same year, IIT acquired shipbuilding capabilities from its predecessor institution - Smith-Kline Beechcraft Corporation - which had been instrumental in developing some of America's most famous vessels such as USS President (CVN 72) and USS John F Kennedy (CVN 79). After years of development work, IIT's first class coastal vessel - the SS United States (R-1) - arrived at its new pier on the riverbank near downtown Libertyville in November 1980. That same year saw another milestone: IIT became one of only two colleges in North America to offer a graduate degree program in marine science. With this new capability came a wealth of new opportunities for students and professionals studying marine mammals around the world. Today, The Illinois State University is home to one of North America's largest marine mammal research programs; our faculty have access to world-class facilities; and our students are able to learn aboutmarine mammals from some of the best scientists on Earth. In addition to serving as an important educational resource for local businesses and residents alike, we believe that education is essential unto human well-being - so we continue providing innovative courses and programs that challenge participants both intellectually and emotionally.

Libertyville is a city in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 54,821 at the 2000 census. It is the most populous municipality in Kane County and one of three cities in the county. It was incorporated on December 1, 1871. The first settler in what is now Libertyville was John Rafferty and his family who arrived there from Aurora on November 15, 1847. John's father had been an unsuccessful fur trader and land speculator in central Canada. After arriving in the United States he set about acquiring 640 acres (250 hectares) of land east of the Kankakee River for $2 per acre. This initial purchase marked the beginning of what would become Libertyville's self-reliance as it sprang up around them; other early settlers also bought land here as farmers or ranchers began to develop agricultural products such as hay, beef cattle, grain and potatoes into what is now a major agricultural center today.

Libertyville was a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States, until the early 21st century. It is best known for being home to the Libertyville War Memorial and its associated park. The village of Libertyville was founded in 1855 by local farmers as a transient settlement on the banks of the Chicago River. The name "liberty" was given to it because it had been part of France during the French and Indian War (1754-1763). The first store in Libertyville was opened by Capt. John Haines on October 10, 1855. In 1865, Libertyvilers voted to secede from Cook County and form their own government under a Constitution adopted that year. They renamed themselves Liberty Township. In 1896, they voted to become an independent city after merging with other nearby villages - including North Avenue - into one municipality. In 1905, when Cook County consolidated with DuPage County and became a unified state under the new system of government known as the Illinois General Assembly, Libertyville remained an unincorporated community within DuPage County. However, due to its size and importance within local governmental structure (particularly withinthe Municipal Districts), it received special attention from legislators who were interested in seeing it grow into something more than just an agricultural community; this led to its incorporation as an official city on July 1, 1905. The population of Libertyville peaked at over 20,000 in 1922 but declined rapidly thereafter due to many factors: prohibition efforts during World War I; suburbanization which took place around that time; increased crime rates throughout Cook County during the 1930s; and finally World War II which caused much destruction throughout Illinois culminating in what is now known as "The Great Chicago Fire." After 1945 there was significant growth back up until 1960 when population dipped below 5,000 again due largely to relocating manufacturing jobs outside of Chicago following several economic cycles throughout that decade such as high technology boom times followed by low tech busts
Libertyville was founded in 1837 by John Marshall and his wife, Harriet. The town became a Settlement of the American Colonization Society in 1839. In 1847, the town was incorporated as a city. Libertyville is one of the oldest cities in Illinois and has been home to many famous persons including Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant, and Franklin D. Roosevelt.
