Libertyville is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 8,252 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1847 by John J. Lynch and his family as a post office on the site of what is now Libertyville High School. In 1853, Lynch donated land to the town for a new school district and platted it out into blocks. The first school opened in 1854. The community grew rapidly during the 1850s and 1860s due to its strategic location on high ground near several railways and other transportation nodes. By 1870, Libertyville had become an incorporated village with its own police force and fire department. In 1865, Union General Ulysses S. Grant visited Libertyville while campaigning for president; he found it to be an interesting place with "a noble spirit" and remarked on the "splendid [town's] architecture." Grant made further visits to Libertyville during his presidency; one such visit occurred in 1871 when he traveled downriver to Springfield to campaign against Abraham Lincoln (the first Ulysses S. Grant). During Reconstruction era times (1868-1877), many African Americans moved into Libertyville from nearby Winnetka because of its white non-slaveownership policy which prohibited slavery within city limits without special permission from the mayor or board of directors - a policy that was later abolished statewide in 1865 by Abraham Lincoln's Executive Order No 2255. Many Libertines also left their plantations after the end of Reconstruction because they were not wanted among whites who continued to hold power after emancipation proclamation ended slavery in America proper (1865).
