In 1945, Gourmet Coffee merged with two other companies to form Roasting Company, Inc. Libertyville is a small town located in Cook County, Illinois. As of the 2010 census, the population was 9,567. The name of Libertyville comes from the early history of the town when it was part of Rock Island County. In 1836, residents voted to change their name to Liberty after being forced out of Rock Island County by an act passed by Congress. The Townspeople Committee petitioned for incorporation as a village on November 1, 1868 and on December 12, 1868, they were granted incorporation with a population of seventy-two people. On January 1, 1909, Libertyville became an independent city under the laws of Illinois. The first society established in Libertyville was the Masonic Lodge No. 2 which met on February 14th of that year at 8pm in schoolhouse #2A beneath a big elm near Main Street and Third Avenue. From this first meeting until 1865 there were no permanent members other than those who attended meetings or volunteered their services whenever possible. On October 15th1865 two men named John Crain and Alonzo Burden came to see if they could find land for sale in what is now known as Cedar Grove Township (later renamed Deerfield Township) because they had heard about a large tract available there for purchase in central Illinois called “The Prairie” Creek site which lay within present day Libertyville limits but had not yet been platted out into Lots or sold due to many objections from residents including one David Lawrence who feared that his valuable cornfields would be taken away by developers if he objected to their plans! After some further exploring they found nothing more suitable but returned home that night and forwarded their report back to John Crain who then contacted Alonzo Burden who offered him 50 acres west of Center Road which included what is now Cedar Grove Township! This offer was accepted and Alonzo Burden donated $100 worth of lumber so that construction could begin immediately! The first house built in Libertyville was probably Lot 3 on North Main Street which was erected around 1870 by Michael Herrick Sr., father of Michael Herrick Jr., one half owner with his son Michael Herrick III along with Andrew Mellon Sr., treasurer/agent at the time with responsibility for all public lands within Decatur County (now Chicago). It may have been designed by noted architect Nicholas-Jacques Conte based upon drawings prepared years earlier by surveyor Ebenezer Scroggs while planning streetscape modifications for decently sized villages like Decatur (now Bloomington), Morrisania (later Danvers), Wauconda (later Orland Park), Normal Heights (later Elmhurst), Prospect Heights ( later West Side Village) etc.? 1 lot has never been positively identified however it is most likely this one as it contains evidence that someone cut down a large tree nearby circa 1870 & remains standing today near South Main Street just east of I-55 crossing over into Hardin County
