Libertyville, Ill. is a village in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,817 at the 2000 census. It is located on the south bank of the Fox River. The Village of Libertyville was organized in 1853 by citizens of Springfield Township and other nearby villages to serve as a local center for trade and culture within the new state of Illinois. The name "Liberty" originated with General James Wilkinson's 1776 Raid on Springfield during the American Revolutionary War. At that time, many of Springfield's residents found refuge in Liberty until they could return home after the war. The village grew rapidly due to its location and role as an important transportation hub for settlers moving westward through central Illinois into Iowa and Missouri during the mid-19th century. In 1881, Libertyville became one of twelve townships (later counties) in McLean County when it was created from parts of three neighboring villages: Bedford Heights, Carrollton Heights, and Elmira Heights). As one of these county townships, Liberty had some degree of independence from neighboring jurisdictions but still functioned as an integral part of McLean County government. With this level of autonomy came opportunities for growth and development within the municipality which culminated in Prohibition-era prohibitionism in 1916 when alcohol became illegal in Illinois under then Governor Abraham Lincoln's "Repeal Act". In 1933, following Prohibition's repeal across most major U.S._countries (including Illinois), Libertyville reverted to its original form as a townships within Mclean County once again enjoying significant levels of self-government including zoning authority; economic development; education; public health services;and general government functions such as firefighting and road maintenance etcetera which continue to this day across all eleven township forms currently comprising Mclean County Government - including Libertyville itself! 1
