Libertyville, Ill. is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is located on the north side of Chicago and is part of the city of Chicago metropolitan area. The town started out as a rural farming community and was founded by Ohio immigrants in 1836. After Illinois became a state in 1847, Libertyville became one of its first towns. In 1861, it became the capital of Illinois and remained so until 1868 when it moved to Urbana because that city had become the state's new capital. Libertyville also played an important role during the American Civil War; it furnished troops for both sides and had two military hospitals built there. After the war, Libertyville continued to grow slowly but steadily due to its location within walking distance of many factories and businesses that supported Chicago's growth during the post-war period. In 1951, Libertyville voters passed a referendum approving annexation by Chicagoland which made it an official suburban town within Chicagoland; this event helped make Libertyville one of Chicagoland's most popular tourist destinations. Today, much of what once constituted rural LibertyVILLE has been replaced by large tracts of single-family homes throughout downtown (the Historic District) which have seen little or no development since incorporation into Chicagoland over 50 years ago In recent years some residents have advocated for secession from Cook County as part of a larger movement towards local control throughout Illinois; however no such effort has yet materialized
Lincoln was born in Libertyville, Illinois on April 12, 1809. He attended the University of Virginia and then moved to Springfield, Illinois to work as a lawyer. In 1841, he was elected mayor of Springfield and served two terms. He then became a U.S. Senator from Illinois and served from 1851 to 1861. During his time in office, he helped pass the Kansas-Nebraska Act and designed the original Kaisersberg Clocktower in Lincoln Park. After his term as senator ended, he resumed his legal career and won another election for Mayor of Springfield in 1865. He died on April 6, 1868 at age 70 years old and is buried atSpringfield National Cemetery.
