Lemont was founded in 1855 by a group of Dutch farmers. The town flourished for a few years until the American Civil War interrupted production. The town returned to prosperity during the Reconstruction era, but declined after World War II. It regained some popularity in the mid-20th century as a bedroom community for Chicago. However, Lemont's fortunes began to decline again in the early 21st century as crime rates increased and its population dwindled. In 2017, Lemont voters passed an ordinance that limited business growth within the city limits and forced most local businesses to sell their products within commuting distance of Chicago or Milwaukee. The ordinance helped to revive Lemont's economy and has since been adopted by other towns in Illinois similar to it.
Lemont, Illinois is a city in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 25,887 at the 2010 census. The city is the county seat of McHenry County. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Lemont was Captain Julius Hofer on May 14, 1831 when he and his family arrived from Bohemia near Prague with six cows and two horses. He named his new town after General George Armstrong Custer who had surrendered at Little Bighorn in 1876 during the Mexican–American War. Lemont became a village on March 15, 1835 when Joshua Goode organized a group of settlers to purchase land around what is now the downtown area from Nicholas Atherton. Goode named his town after John Quincy Adams who had served as President of the United States from 1828 to 1830 and then as Secretary of State from 1830 to 1836. Adams helped found Grinnell College (now Iowa Wesleyan University) in Grinnell, Iowa in 1841 and donated land for that institution's first campus in Lemont. In 1850, Lemont became home to one of three mental hospitals open for patients suffering from insanity or organic brain disease at that time: Elmira Asylum (now Elmira Correctional Facility), Joliette asylum (now Alcoa Steel Box Factory Hospital), or North Western asylum (now KFC). On November 20, 1860 – days after Lincoln was elected President – local citizens raised enough signatures to put into effect a recall election against him because they felt he did not live up to promises made during his campaign regarding education reform and civil service reform within government agencies such as the Post Office Department. With only 8% turnout due to snowstorm conditions – half the number needed by law – Lincoln won re-election by an wide margin over challenger Salmon PLC with 56% of the vote instead of 50%. Lemont saw its heyday during World War I when it became known as "America's Arsenal". Its arsenal included 10 artillery batteries including 3 155mm howitzers which participated in battle against Austro-Hungarian forces on April 6th 1915; 1 machine gun battery which fired shells onto enemy trenches on December 5th 1918; 2 tank battalions which fought off an attack by 1st Infantry Division attacking through Maple Lawn Cemetery; 4 aircraft squadrons which took off daily from Municipal Airport between February 17th 1944 and July 9th 1944 providing strategic bombing support for ground troops fighting along Iwo Jima beachhead; 8 locomotives belonging to Class V "Big Iron" railroad companies were used for hauling materials such as lumber outta town or being pulled by wagons filled with supplies for military bases all over Japan including Okinawa Prefecture where some engines were kept until 1955 before being scrapped Finally 7 pieces of Type XXI tanks - each measuring 35 feet long x 13 feet wide x 11 feet deep - were built especially for use on Yom Kippur Day 1945 while stores inside Hiroshima city center were looted by Japanese soldiers led by major Hitoshi Matsubara en route back home . For many years afterwards people would joke about how if there ever was another world war they'd move away because "the big guns are here." Despite this history Lemont has seen a resurgence recently with several new businesses starting up and more residents moving into the city limits since 2009
