Lemont is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 20,544 at the 2010 census. Lemont is located in the northwestern corner of Cook County and is bordered by the city of Chicago to the east and south, Oak Forest Township to the north, and Villa Park Township to the west. It occupies a small valley sandwiched between two mountain ranges on one side and an open field on the other. The first Europeans to explore what is now Lemont were French traders who passed through in 1763-64 during their exploration of what is now Northwest Indiana. The name "Lemoire" likely derived from this period due to its location along a navigable stream called La Salle's Trace which connected Lake Michigan with Canada. In 1812, General George Armstrong Custer passed through Lemont while raiding Indian villages near present day Chicago; upon his return he recommended that all American soldiers pass through Lemont so as not to cause bloodshed amongst Native Americans. In 1846, James K. Polk served as Ulysses S. Grant'sVice Presidential running mate and visited Lemont while campaigning for President; upon his return he ordered that all public buildings be moved from their original locations in downtown Chicago so that they would be closer to Grant's campaign headquarters at nearby State Street (now Wacker Drive). This event helped spur development around downtownChicago towards today's shopping mall area including Sears Tower (on Michigan Avenue), Northwestern Mutual Tower (now One World Trade Center) and Chase Bank Building (formerly First National Bank Building). Lemoire was originally known as "Higgins Prairie". On December 12, 1871, Methodists led by Rev John Crouse built a church here after traveling from Decatur, Illinois where they had been living since 1847-48; construction began on October 5th of that year and it opened its doors on November 3rd of that year. Reverend Crouse was pastor of therechurch until his death in 1904 prior to which time it was chaired by John Hightower until Reverend Aiken became pastor emeritus following his death in 1978 In 1951-1952 local officials organized a drive for an annexment patterned after annexation plans approved by Congress earlier that year which ultimately failed; however annexed parcels were rezoned for industrial use rather than residential purposes resulting in increased development around present day Lemont including production areas for Ford Motor Company automobiles Assembly Line #1 & 2 plant within walking distance of local schools . At one point there were over 350 businesses operating out of various production facilities located throughout eastern Cook County employing up to 95% American workers including many people employed during World War II when vast numbers of people left Illinois for military service . As recently as 1990 only 25% percent of residents working inside any commercial establishment worked outside those businesses either doing services such as lawn care or retail work . Today nearly all residents are employed inside some form of business or government sector employment making “the town you live in” highly dependent on economic activity According to Forbes Magazine reporter Michael Kappan post office closed operations effective January 1st 2006 reducing postal service presence from 9 full time employees (-5%) compared with 15 (+4%) Mailroom employees at former Post Office Location #2 currently being used as police station despite objections from community leaders who feel having law enforcement available lessens safety issues . Despite protests Community Leaders have decided against tearing down building stating: “we can’t afford not have it There are too many good memories associated with it”
