Lemont, Illinois is a small town located in thewestcentral part of the United States. The population was 5,853 at the 2010 census. It is named after General James Lemont who helped lead the Union army during the American Civil War. The town has a history that goes back to 1847 when it was organized as part of Clinton Township. Lemont was first settled by Englishmen and their families in 1847. They built log cabins and began to farmed land which they did until1871 when they founded a post office and started to sell supplies to other towns in central Illinois. In 1881, they voted to make themselves an incorporated municipality and changed their name to Lemont. In 1896, Lemont became home to one of America's first industrial parks where businesses such as Caterpillar, Ford Motor Company, Wabash Railroad Company, Armour Rubber Works, Singer Sewing Machine Company,among others were established. Lemont is a small town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 6,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Joliet Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white person to live in Lemont was John Fetterman, who arrived in 1836. He built a log cabin on the east side of what is now Elm Street. In 1839, Fetterman married Margaret Hutton and set out for what is now Buffalo Grove, Illinois where he had been born. They divorced in 1841 and Margaret moved to Lemont with her new husband and two young children. In 1845, Fetterman married Minerva Kinnear and they started a grocery store on Elm Street which they operated until it burned down in 1903. In 1847, Lemont became the county seat of Kane County because Jensé Morin petitioned for the position and bypassed McLean (now Bloomington). The first courthouse was built on State Route 5 near Center Street in 1850 and remained in use until 1893 when it was replaced by the present building on Elm Street. In 1861, Lemont got its own post office after one sent from Buffalo Grove failed to arrive due to postal route changes during the American Civil War; this office served as an important link between Kane County's slaveholding counties down south and their free-labor counterparts up north. As Lemont grew more prosperous over time it began to attract large numbers of immigrants – many of whom were attracted by its scenic surroundings and new opportunities for work ashore shipyards or manufacturing plants that sprang up along Lake Michigan shortly thereafter (the area's " fertile soil"). By 1920 there were over 100 businesses operating here employing around 625 people; however by 1930 only 47 remained thanks to falling prices for goods produced inland while workers overseas shipped much cheaper items back into America threatening local jobs throughout both world wars (and also Depression-era economic policies that increased taxes]).
