The history of marine gifts in Lemont, Illinois dates back to 1876. At that time, the city was home to a United States Naval Base and a number of naval officers made their homes in the city. One of these officers, Commodore John F. Schuyler, donated many items from his navy collection to Lemont. One of these items was a small boat called the General Sloat which he used for fishing and pleasure trips along the Illinois River. The boat and its equipment were later donated to Lemont Historical Society by Commodore Schuyler’s widow, Mrs. John Laughlin Sloat. In 1916, Jerome Hallett bought an old sailing ship called the Luna from Captain Arthur J. Forster at an auction in Chicago. The Luna had been converted into a cargo ship and operated as a freighter until she was hit by lightning in 1921 and sunk off southern California near San Pedro Bay. Her crew were saved by local fishermen who raised her onshore before they sold her back to Captain Forster for $15,000 USD. Her historic significance is underscored by her classification as a National Historic Landmark (#764). Over time, other maritime gifts have been donated to Lemont Historical Society from various individuals or businesses including: -A motorboat named Enterprise which was gifted to us by Mrs. Edwin Waferman; -A tugboat named Olympia which was gifted to us by Mr./Mrs./Captain Rufus Pyle; -A schooner named Belle Isle which was gifted to us by Dr./Ms./Nancy Gaunt; -An oil tanker called HMCS Alberta which was gifteededto us by Capt/Cdr.(Ret.) Don Armstrong; -And finally, on July 12th 2019 we received our newest donation – A large船 – The USS Constitution Museum Gift!

Lemont, Illinois is a small town in the state of Illinois. The population was 5,451 at the 2010 census. The area that makes up Lemont is located in Kane County. Lemont was founded by farmers in 1854. The first post office was established in 1855. In 1870, the community had a population of 350 and a school for boys and girls. By 1907, the population had grown to 3,000 and Lemont became an incorporated town. In 1945, Lemont experienced its first tornado outbreak when two EF2 tornadoes struck the community. In 1999, Lemont was named one of America's "Most Infamous Small Towns". This accolade is given to towns that have been featured on television shows such as "The Office", "ER" and "The Simpsons". Lemont is home to K-12 public education with three schools: North High School (grades 9-12), South High School (grades 9-12), and East Central Middle School (7th-8th grades). There are also six private high schools located within or adjacent to Lemont: Bishop Nehlen Catholic High School (4A/4Bboys/girls), Christ Our King Catholic High School (9th-10th grades), Holy Cross Academy (11th-12th grades), Stritch Jesuit Preparatory School (6th-7th grade) for boys only, and Park Ridge Intermediate Unit No. 109 for girls only. The village of Lemont was organized on December 12, 1847 from the sections of Unincorporated Village of Glenview that were east and south of present-day Lemont Township. The first post office in Lemont was established on January 15, 1850. The name of the town originally been "Lake View". In 1857, a group led by John Pembertonore moved to Lemont from Canada and began developing what would become downtown. In 1860, an act passed by the Illinois General Assembly added Lemont to Cook County and made it an incorporated village with its own board of trustees. On October 20, 1861 residents voted to change the name to "Lemont" after President Abraham Lincoln's birthplace in Springfield, Illinois

This event is often considered to be one of the most devastating fires in history. During World War II, Lemont played an important role in the production of munitions for America's war effort. Many businesses and homes were lost in the fire that burnt down part of town on September 12, 1945. After World War II ended, many people left Lemont for various reasons including technological advancements which led to increases in productivity and air travel; however, some residents remain entrenched in their communities today.
