Lemont, Illinois is an unincorporated community in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 571 at the 2010 census. Lemont was platted on May 1, 1874 by Wm. B. Halsey and John Ladd of Aurora, Illinois as a village named for Lemont Township in Cook County. On November 16, 1893 after being proposed by the Lemont Board of Trade and Village President Simeon Sargent, the name Lemont was changed to Arlington Heights when Arlington Heights was annexed into Chicago from Villa Park on February 17, 1893. The first post office opened in Arlington Heights on March 10, 1875. The boundaries of Lemont have changed over time; it once included most of present-day Kane County and part of what is now Downers Grove Park. In 1908 it became part of the new city limits of Chicago; its last annexation occurred in 1966 when Addison Township (now Elmhurst) joined Chicago. Lemont has two parks: Lemont-Arlington Heights Park and Lemont-Addison Township Park which are located near its centerline between North Avenue and 95th Street Extension across from South Side High School shopping mall). Both parks offer sports fields with basketball courts/pavements as well as baseball diamonds/courses for both children and adults to play on or use for picnics or other purposes during summertime months (May through September). Lemont is a small, unincorporated community in Sangamon County, Illinois, United States. The population was 905 at the 2000 census. It lies on the border of Lemont Township and Union Township. Lemont was established in 1834 as a stop on the Underground Railroad. In 1871, it became the seat of Sangamon County after its creation from parts of Una and Kane counties. The town's original charter states that "the inhabitants thereof may exercise all their natural rights and privileges hereinbefore granted to them." The first post office opened in 1836, and remained open until 1951. In 1865, Lemont was home to one of the earliest interracial marriages when Elijah Kelley married white girl Nancy Greenough at Methodist Church. As Lemont grew more racially mixed over time, it had two stores run by black families before they were closed in the late 1960s because of zoning restrictions placed on businesses with African-American customers. In 1971, Lemont saw its first organized football game when local high school students joined forces with neighboring towns for a summer exhibition contest known as "The Great Lakes Tag Team Game". From then until 1984 there were no fewer than 10 annual pre-school tournaments hosted in Lemont that allowed children from throughout Sangamon County to come compete against each other without having to travel far away. These competitions have since become defunct but are still kept alive through social media activities such as Facebook Live video games or photo shoots between teams (known as "Tournament Day"). In 2016 an event called "Super Mario Bros.: The Legend of Zelda - A Link to The Past" took place at Lemont High School; this marked the first time a video game had been played at an American high school since 1978 when Super Mario Bros.: Super Odyssey was played at Chicago's Northwestern University.[1]
