Lemont is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 24,316 at the 2010 census. Lemont is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The community was platted in 1847 by George Washington Burnham and his brother-in-law Amos L. Butterfield. Lemont's first post office opened in 1851. The town became a Village of Lemont on November 1, 1907. On December 15, 2009, Lemont merged with neighbouring towns of Arlington Heights and Grayslake to form the city of Chicago.[1] Lemont is located at (41.813203, -87.569015).[2] According to the 2010 census,[3] it has a total area of 9 square miles (21 km2). Lemont is a rural town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. It is a census-designated place (CDP) and the population was 5,827 at the 2010 census. The Lemont CDP covers an area of 3 square miles (9 km²). Lemont was founded in 1853 by John H. Lemont and his wife Sarah A. Lemont as a small community on the southern edge of the then-new township of Rome Township on the north side of what is now Chicago Avenue. The name "Lemont" originated from early settler George Fenton's hunting ground near where it now stands. In 1868, when Rome Township was disbanded, Lemont became part of newly created Addison Township and remained so until its incorporation into Cook County in 1903. The town center sits on a hill overlooking Antelope Hill Road about 1 mile south of downtown Rome. The post office operated from 1853 to 1865; it moved to its present location in 1865. The first store opened in 1854 and the first school year began in1855. Manufacturing started immediately after World War I based on inexpensive labor available due to prohibitionist policies then prevailing in America; however production stopped during Prohibition because demand for liquor grew too high% In 1922, Lemont annexed much of unincorporatedarea around modern day Maywood eastward along Gettysburg Road until that area had a total population of just over 2 dozen people % As recently as 1951 there were no churches or other public buildings within reach of Antelope Hill Road; however by 1973 all but one church had been built% A major fire destroyed most all but one building in 1961 percent ; however reopened six months later% Today, residents are active contributors to their communities through businesses such as farming, manufacturing and services sectors%. There are also many artists living and working here including painters Edwin Robertshaw* & Don Geddes* who reside adjacent to LemONT College
