Lansing is known for its Renaissance Revival architecture and for being a center for manufacturing and technology. The history of Lansing begins with organized village life on Mud Lake in what is now Ingham County. The first permanent settler was Nicholas Trimble, who arrived in 1796 from England with his family. By 1814, settlement had expanded to include 300 people on an area that extended along two forks of the Muskegon River west of present-day Lansing. Settlement by white men began gradually throughout most ofMichigan during this time period because acquiring land was expensive and difficult due to Native American resistance to European encroachment; however, Lansing was among the earliest towns established in Wayne County (now Ingham) because it would provide easy access to goods available only near Detroit. In 1817, John Swayne purchased land east of present-day Lansing on which he erected a log cabin called "Swansea Grove." Three years later he constructed an even more impressive structure - an artificial pond filled with pigs that swirled around when disturbed - which served as both a social gathering spot for neighbors and a proving ground for new techniques for farming operations. This early agricultural experimentation led to Swayne becoming oneofthe first farmers in what would become Lansing Township (now Ingham County). The town's growth continued apace through the 1830s when horse teams were brought into use withintown limits; by 1840 there were three stores, four pubs (the first being built by Joel Dickinson), two churches (oneMethodist and one Baptist), two schools (oneconverted from a barn into classrooms), five dwellings (!), two mills (two sash windowsills removed at each end so they could be filled with flour dustbin strings!), six farmssteading 30 head or more cattle each; seven sawmills operated hereabouts producing lumber alloys such as walnut joinery boards etc.; fourteen households raised chickens!
