Lake Zurich is a large body of water located in southwestern Illinois, United States. The name comes from the French "Lac de Zaire" which means "lake of the Zaire River." It formed as an impoundment on the right bank of the Chicago River after a major flooding in 1849. The original village, founded by farmers and traders in 1848, was on the north side of the river.
