The Coast Guard has been a part of the Lake Zurich community since 1922. The organization was founded as the Harbor Patrol to protect the shoreline and waterways in and around Lake Zurich. In 1952, the Coast Guard became an separate branch within the United States Department of Transportation. The present-day Coast Guard Station at 1 North Main Street in Lake Zurich was built in 1966. Today, the Coast Guard provides law enforcement and protection services on both land and sea. They offer a variety of services including search and rescue, water safety, maritime security, public health and safety, coastal erosion control, fisheries management, environmental monitoring and research. In addition to their duty onshore and offshore patrol areas, members of the Coast Guard have been stationed in various places around Illinois for years now. Currently there are three stations located in McHenry County - one at Mound Point Marina on Sturgeon Bay Harbor; one at Calumet Landing Marina just outside of Danville; and one at White Sands Beach Pier just south of Chicago Heights. In 2012 alone, members from five different stations responded to more than 950 incidents statewide involving vessels or people stranded offshore or ashore due to weather conditions (including blizzards). Additionally during that year service rendered totaled $19 million dollars which helped support local businesses throughout Illinois.

Lake Zurich is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 43,723 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of the Chicago metropolitan area. Lake Zurich was founded in 1802 by Captain George Stephenson and Major James K. Polk as a trading post on the then-new Rock Island Canal. In 1836, it became part of the new state of Illinois and was renamed to Lake Zurich after its original founder. The city annexed adjacent villages along the canal in 1850 and 1868; total annexation reached 36 villages by 1910. The United States Coast Guard (USCG) was created on May 6, 1790, following the Continental Congress’s resolution to establish a navy. The first USCG vessels were built at Norfolk, Virginia, and commissioned on December 16, 1790. In addition to its primary mission of patrolling and protecting coastal waters, the USCG also conducts Search and Rescue operations in instances of shipwrecks or other emergencies ashore. In 1932, the USCG adopted a unique gift history which has been perpetuated through present day gifts from individual donors. This history begins with the initiation of the Coast Guard Academy Commemorative Coin Program in 1932 by Rear Admiral John Fenton Rickenbacker. As part of this program, Rear Admiral Rickenbacker donated $20 million to be used for scholarships at the Coast Guard Academy and for research into barometer technology and coast guard command post design. These donations continue to this date as expressions of support for both the academies and our Coast Guardsmen who serve within them. Today’s Coast Guard Gifts Since its inception in 1932, there have been countless contributions made by individuals throughout the United States Coast Guard Service. The treaty established that Chicago would control all of lake Michigan and ceded land to Indiana.
