Lake Zurich is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 25,528 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1836 by Asahel Davenport and his wife Nancy as a small trading post on the eastern edge of what is now Kane County. Davenport had come from a large family of farmers who lived near Peoria, Illinois. In 1838, he named the town after his father-in-law and fellow farmer Amos Kendall Lake Zurich (1784–1857). The original village charter called for only 15 people to live in the first year; but it quickly grew to 100+. By 1850, it had two churches and a school. In 1856, Davenport sold land east of the river to William Parkhurst Sr., giving him an additional parcel of land for development. Parkhurst named his new town "Lake Zurich" after himself and began building homes there in 1860. By 1870, Lake Zurich had developed into one of the largest villages in Kane County with over 350 residents. In 1899, when newly formed Kane County was created from half of Cook County's lands north of Springfield Township (then known as Jacksonville Township), Lake Zurich became one of its five townships within that county. This made it possible for Lakeside Hospital—the first hospital west of Chicago—to be built there without having to move from its original site just east of downtown Chicago on State Street between Randolph and Dearborn streets (now Forbes Place). Lake Zurich also hosted various agricultural fairs throughout summertime until about 1925 when those events were moved to more central locations around Cook County or outside Illinois due to air pollution concerns during that time period. However some notable agricultural exhibits still take place annually at Lakeside Hospital Grounds including Iowa corn exhibitions which are held every May since 1959; soybean exhibitions which are held every other year starting in 1984; latex flower shows/exhibits which typically run from late fall through early spring; root canal Demonstration Day each year on or before October 10th; Saddlebred horse show/exhibition each year on or before November 5th; poultry exhibitions beginning every March starting in 1966 followed by hog auctions following about six months later .
