Lake In The Hills is an unincorporated community located in Grundy County, Illinois. It was named for the hills around it. The community began as a cluster of log cabins and farming hamlets on the north side of the artificial lake created by a dam project in the 1920s.growing steadily, by 1930 there were over fifty homes and businesses in what was then a rural area. By 1940, over one thousand people lived within a radius of the water's edge, including many farmers who used the lake for fishing and recreation. Growth continued through the years until World War II when most of the population left to fight in Europe or war-related occupations. During peacetime, various businesses operated out of small storefronts along Main Street: ice cream parlors, hardware stores, beauty salon/spas, and other services which served residents from all walks of life. However, during wartime local employment dropped significantly as thousands turned to search for food and shelter in nearby cities or townships. Many residents moved into vacated houses that had been abandoned during construction or when troops arrived in town after being deployed to Europe; others built huts out of materials they could find lying around town such as old tires or chicken wire fence posts. In 1948-49 efforts began to resurrect Lake In The Hills by founding the Community Development Authority (CDA) to oversee development within its boundaries while maintaining public access to it; initially this involved creating recreational trails and improving infrastructure such as roads and drainage systems.
