In 1881, the townsite was laid out as a township and it remained that way until 1925 when it became a charter city. By 1960, there were only 2 buildings left standing in In The Hills Township (now Lake In The Hills). The main economic activity of In The Hills has been agricultural production for many years; however, recent years have seen an increase in development with several high-rise apartments and hotels being built on or near the town's center. There are also several small businesses located throughout the village which provide services such as grocery store/cafeteria/diner/homemade ice cream etc.. The primary education available to residents of In The Hills is public school; howeverprivate schools are also available within walking distance of most homes. The Battle of Lake In The Hills was fought on July 10, 1906, between two American armies- the Ninth Cavalry Regiment commanded by Major General John Pershing and the Fifth Infantry Regiment commanded by Colonel George Armstrong Custer. It was one of the largest and most important battles of World War I. The battle began as a skirmish between American forces and German troops, but quickly escalated into a full-blown battle. Bystanders watched as both sides fought with abandon, using whatever resources they could muster to maintain their advantage over their opponents. By late afternoon, Pershing had managed to lead his regiment against overwhelming odds and routed the enemy force. This victory marked an instant turning point in American military history and helped prevent Germany from achieving an overall victory at World War I. Since its creation, Lake In The Hills has become one of America’s most popular tourist destinations; it is home to several golf courses, theme parks, lakeside restaurants, and more.
