The Marine Corps was first activated in 181. The service has served our country continuously since World War II, with over 350,000 Marines and Sailors serving in more than 190 countries. In Lake Forest, Illinois, where the Marine Barracks is located, the tradition of giving back to those who have helped us stretches back more than 50 years. Since 1941, when Marines began delivering Christmas presents to families living near Camp Pendleton in Northern California, this community has supported our men and women in uniform by Bangladeshi refugees who have come to America seeking a better life. The Marine Corps has a long and proud history of deploying gifts to its troops. The Gifts of War Museum in Quantico, Virginia, preserves and displays the many different types of gift wrappings and small boxes used by Marines during World War II and the Korean War. One of the earliest examples of Marines bringing gifts to their fellows was during World War I. In 1917, the Marine Band played at a military maneuvers near Washington D.C. One man brought a presentation case filled with toys for children in one corner of the field. Another marine brought food for soldiers who were digging trenches in France. There are even stories about marines bringing cigarettes to service members in Afghanistan or providing beer to troops on deployment overseas. During World War II, Marines began using containers made from metal and plastic as part of their gift delivery system. These containers often had a built-in box that could be opened to reveal various items such as radios, cigars, cigarettes and other paraphernalia for use by Marines stationed abroad. In 1951, Marines began using small boxes called “paks” as part of their gift delivery system. Paks were designed to fit easily into shipping crates and could hold a variety of items such as snacks or drinks for troops stationed abroad. Today, marines continue to use this old-fashioned gift delivery system as part of their holiday season tradition!

Lake Forest, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and has been called "the heart of Chicagoland" since its incorporation as a town in 1871. The first known inhabitants of what is now Lake Forest were the Potawatomi Indians. A post office was established at present-day Lake Forest in 1872, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1912. The name comes from a large body of mannikin water on the west bank of the Chicago River that was named for Jean Baptiste Chastelain de la Motte by General David Dixon (1763-1827), commander of Ulysses S. Grant's Army during the American Civil War. La Motte explored and mapped much of Illinois before moving south to this region about 1800. He named two small streams - one near Northwestern Ave., now part of Irving Park Rd., east of Grandma Ave., and another located near Kedzie Ave., now Wabash Ave.- Oakhurst Creek after his estate at Hawthorne Hill outside Paris, France: L'Aiguille d'Or (The Arrow Of Gold). By 1872 Lakeside Cemetery had also been organized with graves dating back to 1794 within sight of present-day Northwestern Ave.. In 1881, John Fenton platted what became known as "Fenton Township", which lay southeast cornerof current-day Lake Forest and included parts then lying east and northeastof today's Elmwood Park neighborhood on State Street between Milwaukee Avenue and Cicero Avenue. In 1896, Fenton Township became part of Cook County when it was created from portionsOf DuPage County including modern day Lake forest
Lake Forest was founded in 1815 by a group of investors led by John Edwards. The town grew rapidly, and in 1837 it became the capital of Illinois. The city developed a strong downtown infrastructure, including a grand school, library, and several hotels. By the end of the 19th century, Lake Forest had become one of the most important cities in Illinois.
