The city was founded in 1847 by John Fitch and is named after a large body of water on the north side of Chicago. The first post office in Lake Forest was established in 1848. In 1861, it became the first town to be incorporated in Cook County. In 1870, it became one of the three cities in Cook County that were designated as areas for black residents (the others being Englewood and Hyde Park). In 1893, Lake Forest annexed parts of neighboring Evanston. As an inner-city community with high levels of poverty and crime, Lake Forest has been known for its harsh winters and lack of amenities such as shopping malls or daycare options for its citizens; nevertheless, it has seen rapid gentrification since 2000 due to suburbanization across the county. In 1847, Dutchman Hendrik Jan van Rijn imported a small amount of wild cedar trees from Brazil and started making roasting them himself at home using a slow fire method that he had learned from Portuguese traders working along the Brazilian coast some years earlier. From this initial venture, Van Rijn's company became one of the most important producers of premium coffees around the world – selling their beans direct to consumers through retailers such as Jardine & Maynard (now Unilever) and Saks Fifth Avenue (now Macy’s). In 1913 Van Rijn merged with Philips Coffee Company Ltd., forming what is now known as Philips International Coffee Company Ltd.. At this point in time, Dutch Schultz founded Schultz Coffee Co., Incorporated with his father-in-law Jacobus Johannes van der Linde as managers; these men continued running Schultz's business until its sale to Keurig Corporation in 1954.) During World War II Dutch Schultz served as commander of Allied forces stationed at El Alamein where he introduced Iraqis to espresso while they were being held captive under Japanese occupation; later he donated equipment used at El Alamein to Keurig Corporation so that Iraqi customers could enjoy high quality coffee while relaxing aboard shipyards ashore! Lake Forest, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 52,928 at the 2010 census. It is the third most populous city in Cook County after Chicago and Urbana. The city is the county seat of Cook County. Lake Forest's history began with a small settlement by Methodist missionaries on the banks of the north branch of the Kedzie River in 1827. The settlers were soon followed by other religious groups who planted churches and schools here. In 1839, Lake Forest became a town when it was annexed into Chicago as part of that city's growth. The post office at what is now Lake Forest was established on December 12, 1838, by John Burtis and James Averill from Parma Township in present-day Kane County. The first store was built at 17 Niles Avenue (now Wacker Drive). By 1840 there were six stores in town and two hotels; one operated by John Armour and his son Isaac Armour; one by George Houghton; and one by Amos Eaton. A courthouse had been erected but not used when Chicago amalgamated with other towns in1847 to form the City of Chicago under new governance arrangements that excluded village presidents from their villages' councils. In 1850, Rufus Nixon moved to Lake Forest from Peoria where he had been president of American Old Time Fiddlers Convention & Music Ground Company which presented an event billed as "the world's first music show". On October 15th 1850 at 7:00pm Nixon played violin for 3 hours without intermission before an audience numbering up to 5500 people including President Abraham Lincoln
