Gourmet Coffee has been located here since 1886. The first gourmet coffee shop opened in 1886 on Elm Street in what is now the Lake Forest neighborhood of Chicago. At that time, coffee beans were ground fresh and roasted by hand. Today's gourmet coffee shops offer high-quality beans from all over the world and carry a wide variety of roasts and flavors to choose from. Lucille was a French independent bakers' ovens saleswoman who started working at her husband's business when he opened Gourmets Coffee House as a small catering business in 1886. After years of hard work baking goods for friends and family members, Harry Christopher decided to open his own café with his wife as part of an effort to promote fine quality coffee acrossChicagoand beyond. In 1913 they opened another café called Café Monaco on West Adams Boulevard which quickly became one of the largest java houses in Chicagosouthwest Side district – still going strong nearly 100 years later!
