The Coast Guard has been in operation in the Lake Forest community of Chicago since 1912. That year, the first Coast Guard station was built on the now-demolished site of a former industrial plant. The present-day Coast Guard Station at 100 W. Addison St., opened in 1924 and is one of the oldest active stationhouses in the United States. In 1922, President Calvin Coolidge dedicated a new facility for public use on Michigan Avenue in Chicago that served as headquarters for both the U.S.CG and USCG until 1972 when they merged into one agency, Homeland Security and Secure World Foundation (HSF). The building also housed 6 administrative offices, 2 squads/boat houses/cabins for officers ashore (later replaced by helicopter pads), 4 mess halls/kitchens, 12 barracks areas/, 1 gymnasium and 5 storage sheds/. The Headquarters Annex Building at 111 S Michigan Ave. was erected between 1974-1977 to accommodate an expansion of DHS&SFW's activities which included: establishment of a National Reconnaissance Office; creation of 3 Regional Offices; reorganization and merger of several agencies; assumed management by DHS&S FW from HSF on July 1st, 1998. The Annex had initial occupancy by Customs & Border Protection (CBP) until their move out in 2006 when it became home to Special Agent In Charge (SAIC) - Region III bureau - Sector West office responsible for all investigations within that region including smuggling efforts along I-95 corridor! On Feb 9th, 2009 a brand new $126 million Headquarters annex were dedicated with much fanfare by Mayor Richard M Daley who stated "this is not only an important symbol but also reflects our city’s commitment to homeland security." It includes 3 large screening rooms / hallways totaling over 2600 sq ft., more than enough space for special agents such as counterterrorism section commander Paul Fishman USN to work from his command center including satellite phone systems connectable directly to HQ control room located adjacent via private elevator! The addition include 14000 sq ft cafeteria with multiple bars / restaurants / grocery stores including liquor stores adjacent to secure viewing area overlooking DuPage River

In 1922, when Northwestern Illinois University opened its doors within an old mental hospital on Dearborn Street in central Lake Forest, enrollment swelled so quickly that property owners had no choice but to build an additional school on top of their homes for students and faculty alike. Today's NIU campus comprises nearly 3/4ths of all square footage (2 million sq ft) inside Dearborn Park Elementary School and more than 1/4th (910 acres or 328 hectares) east and west of it across Northwest Highway from Elmwood Golf Course

Lake Forest, Illinois was founded in 1811 by Major General James K. Polk and his wife Sarah Knox Polk. The town was named in honor of President John Quincy Adams, who had donated land to the village. The population of Lake Forest increased from 350 in 1851 to 2,500 by 1860. The first post office was opened in 1852. In 1865, the railroad arrived and the town quickly grew into a thriving community with a population of 5,000 by 1870. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, Lake Forest became known for its excellent shipping trade due to its location on the Mississippi River at their mouth. By 1915, however, transport via Railroad had replaced sailing as the main means of shipping goods between Chicago and other parts of America. The town experienced a significant decline during World War I as most production stopped due to shortages of materials caused by munitions being produced overseas . However, following World War II it exploded in growth once again as new industries started up such as plastics manufacturing and auto assembly . Today, Lake Forest is one of the most vibrant communities in Illinois with over 30 businesses operating within its boundaries and over 100 households living there full-time
