Lake Forest is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 55,405 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Cook County after Chicago. The center of Lake Forest is home to one of the largest concentrations of artisan coffee roasters in the United States and it has been called "the most expensive place to drink coffee". The city's history goes back to 1853 when it was annexed by Chicago from Elgin Township. In 1865, John D. Rockefeller founded Standard Oil here and began production of kerosene products that would later be renamed ExxonMobil. In 1893, a company named Jardine bought out Rockefeller's interests and continued production of gasoline and oil products here until 1901 including the construction of an oil refinery that remains in use today as Jardine Tower. In 1911, Samuel Bronfman founded Seagrams Brewing Company with his brother Joe; their first brewery was located on State Street in Elmhurst (now part of Park West). In 1915 they moved to 725 Wabash Avenue which became their main brewing facility until they closed it in 1957 due to restrictions placed on them by local zoning laws; it reopened as Seagrams Brewery II on Addison Street within a few years before closing again for good in 1971. A new brewery opened on North Michigan Avenue adjacent to Navy Pier in 1978; this facility also closed down several times but reopened each time with different owners before finally closing again in 2000 following Prohibition-era liquor sales regulations which had been relaxed since then. Lake Forest was first settled in 1793 by the Potawatomi people. In 1812, the United States acquired land from Great Britain in the Treaty of Fort Dearborn. The area became part of the Illinois Territory after Illinois was admitted to the Union on March 15, 1847. The population of Lake Forest grew rapidly during the 1850s and 1860s because of new construction and agriculture. In 1865, a railroad was completed through central Illinois andLake Forest became an important center for transportation. During World War I, Lake Forest participated in military efforts as a munitions production center. After the war, local businesses expanded their operations to include light industrial and service sectors.During the early 21st century, lake forest has experienced rapid growth as a bedroom community for Chicagoans working in downtown Chicago or elsewhere in north-central Illinois.
