Lake Forest is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population of the city was 127,746 at the 2010 census. The name "Lake Forest" comes from two early French settlers, François-Jean de la Vallière and Nicolas L’Enfant. La Vallière named his land "Vallee des Fous," translating to "Valley of the Crazy People." In 1847, Nicholas L’Enfant surveyed what would become Lake Forest on behalf of General John H. Rawlins for the government of Illinois. The town was platted on April 12, 1848. A post office called Lake Forest was established at this location on May 1st, 1850. The first school in what is now Lake Forest opened in 1857; it was a one-room schoolhouse near where Main Street and Glenwood Ave intersect today. In 1865, Mayor George Wirths dedicated a new park—now known as Central Park—in honor of US President Ulysses S Grant who had visited Lake Forest that year while visiting Chicago. That same year saw another milestone when the first electric streetcar ran through downtown Chicago to North Avenue & State Street—the first streetcar line in America! In 1886–87, work began on an ambitious project to connect two main east–west routes: the Green Line and then Blue Line (later extended). Construction finally completed in 1896! By 1907, wealthy citizens such as Wirths were building several high-rise buildings including University Tower which still stands today and has been used by many different organizations over the years including law enforcement agencies and commercial enterprises as well as being used for home rentals/condo development since its inception! Development continued into World War II with numerous homes being built around Navy Pier beforeit became Naval Station Great Lakes (now McCormick Place) after World War II ended! Lake Forest is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population of the city was 103,574 at the 2010 census. Lake Forest was first settled by Quakers in 1795. In 1847, it became part of the newly formed Village of North Lawndale. On July 1, 1863, as a result of the American Civil War, North Lawndale and much of South Lawndale were absorbed into what would become Lake Forest. The village's water supply came from two small creeks that flowed through nearby Deerfield Township; when those creeks were diverted for irrigation in 1902, Lake Forest had to build its own dam to provide drinking water for itself and its citizens. In 1906, Southeastern Illinois Electric Railway built a line to reach downtown Chicago via Deerfield Township; this made it possible for people living in rural areas within Cook County to have easy access to urban amenities such as shopping malls and schools. At that time, only small towns had electric service – so many people still relied on large generators set up near their homes for power until more recent times when solar panels have become popular among homeowners
Lake Forest was originally a populated area that extended from the eastern edge of Joliet County, Illinois, to the Michigan state line. The area that is now Lake Forest was first settled in 1836 by a group of local farmers and their families. The town of Eveleigh was founded in 1840, and the village of Crystal City were established in 1845. In 1865, the village of Glenview was founded, and in 1871 the town of Orion Prairie were established. By 1920, all of Lake Forest had been annexed into Chicago.
