Lake Forest, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 69,814 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Illinois after Chicago. Lake Forest is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and has a population of over 1 million people. The first settlement in what is now Lake Forest was founded by Nicholas Larkin in 1829 on land that he had purchased from the Miami tribe for $4 per acre. In 1838, Daniel Webster and his family moved to this community from Northfield, Minnesota. They were followed by other settlers including John A. Dolan who began farming here in 1840 and James Wirtz who built a sawmill on the current site of Northwestern University in 1845. In 1862, General William Tecumseh Sherman's army passed through this area during its march across Illinois towards St Louis; as a result of this event and others such as the Battle of Peoria (1863) which resulted in significant Native American losses, Congress passed an act authorizing President Abraham Lincoln to purchase 1 million acres (540 km²) ofland within Illinois for use as a national reserve known as "the Great Lakes Reserve". This parcel included most of what is now Lake Forest. The first village established within the limits designated for it by Congress was West Side Village near present day Midway Drive and Racine Avenue; it was named after Colonel Robert Ewing Woodruff who served as Superintendent of Indian Affairs under Abraham Lincoln during his time as President. In 1870–71 when towns became cities their boundaries changed with LakeForest lying within Cook County until 1889 when its boundaries were changed again with what is now Elmhurst placed within Riverwest Township following its incorporation into Chicago; however much like many other municipalities throughout Cook County at some point during the 20th century annexed adjacent villages or rural land making contact between residents difficult or impossible so annexation forms are often quite definitive indicating changes over time rather than actual change to municipal borders which can be more fluidly interpreted due to historical context

Lake Forest was founded in 1824 by John and Catherine Fuller. The Fullers were the first European settlers in what is now Illinois. At first, the Fullers named their land after their two main daughter’s namesakes: Lake Forest and Cindy. In 1829, they moved to a more permanent home on the current site of the city of Elgin. TheFuller family would continue to live in Lake Forest for over 100 years until their death in 1957.
