Langdon, Ill. (August 12, 1861-April 5, 1939) was an American politician and jurist who served as the 29th Secretary of State of Illinois from 1926 to 1933 and as the 35th Governor of Illinois from 1933 to 1939. He is also known for his work on creating the University of Illinois system and for his role in helping create the International Monetary Fund. Langdon was born in Langdon, Iowa, on August 12, 1861. He attended Bradley Academy and then Wheaton College where he graduated with a Bachelor's degree in 1883. After completing his undergraduate studies, Langdon returned toIowa and worked as a law clerk for Judge John W. Simpson before becoming a law partner at Harper & Hart in 1885. From 1889 until 1892 he served as Assistant Attorney General of Iowa under William McKinley before moving to Chicago and joining The New York Law firm of Sheppard, Marson & McCloy where he became one of the leading attorneys in Chicago. In 1897 he moved back to Illinois where he joined The New York Law firm again and began representing farmers in connection with their land claims during the sugar beet boomtowns belt around Chicago. In 1898 Langdon was elected United States District Court judge for Cook County, Illinois after being nominated by President Grover Cleveland. He held this position until 1902 when he resigned due to health problems which led him to become involved with agricultural policy issues once more within The New York Law Firm while still managing its clients' cases; this experience helped him develop a strong interest in world trade which would later shape his views on economic policy matters when he becameSecretary of State in 1926). In 1901 Langdonna ran unsuccessfully for election as governor of Illinois against incumbent Newton Davenport but won re-election three years later with 66% of the vote against Davenport's 34%. In1903 Langdonna ran again for governor but this time lost handily to Davenport with only 26% of the vote compared to Davenordven't have run since winning two terms previously without any major accomplishments other than officeholding/government service.).
