La Grange Park is a community in St. Louis County, Illinois, United States. It was founded in 1849 by Irish immigrants as part of the Great Chicago Famine Relief Act. The population was 9,868 at the 2010 census. La Grange Park is located on the eastern edge of the city of St. Louis and is bordered to the north by Midtown and to the east by University Heights. The first European settlers in what is now La Grange Park were French Canadians who landed in 1795 along with other Canadian families during the Quebec Purchase (1763-1765). The area that would become La Grange Park was surveyed and purchased from John Belknap, Sr., owner of a farm near present day Central High School, on November 12, 1849 by Simeon Wexler and his brother Solomon Wexler. The original name for this location was "Sandusky." In 1851 it changed to "LaGrange," after General LaGrange's home state of Ohio. In 1875 it became "Stroudsburg" after local merchant Edwin Stainforth Strroudy donated land for a public school there. On December 2, 1909, President William McKinley dedicated a park in honor of his ancestor Colonel John Millington Blair (1819-1884), founder and first Mayor of Stroudsburg
