The La Grange Park Army Base was one of the first military installations in Illinois. It opened on October 1, 1861 and served as a training ground for the state’s volunteer militia and U.S. cavalry forces during the American Civil War. The base closed in 1865, but reopened in 1867 as a prison camp forrended to the Illinois State Militia after the outbreak of the Mexican-American War. The prison camp operated until 1872, when it was closed again and its inmates dispersed throughout Illinois. In 1903, La Grange Park became home to the Wisconsin Infantry Regiment (2nd Wisconsin) stationed there during World War I. The regiment served under General John J. Pershing and fought at Caporetto, Chantilly Heights, Argonne Forest, Battle of Belleau Wood and Vimy Ridge. After World War I ended, the regiment moved to Fort Snelling in Minnesota where it remained until 1919 when it returned to La Grange Park and reorganized as an infantry battalion under command of Lieutenant Colonel Harry Payson Smith Jr.. The battalion participated in World War II as part of Combat Officer Training Unit 8 (COTU-8) and Battle of Midway before returning home to active duty in 1943 as part of First Marine Division’s III Amphibious Corps during Leyte Gulf campaign. In 1945–46, COTU-8 rejoined First Marine Division’s VI Amphibious Corps which invaded Saipan after Japan capitulated; however unit never saw combat due to armistice ending hostilities that day). In 1951–52, Second Artillery Battalion (3rd Iowa) was dismounted from Third Infantry Division's 3rd Brigade Center at Camp Douglas located east of Jacksonville on Chicago River opposite Kenwood Cemetery]]. This unit replaced 2nd Artillery Battalion which had been disbanded at Fort Sheridan near Rockford[].
