The USS Kewanee was a battleship that served in the United States Navy from 1912 until 1945. She was built at the Bethlehem Steel Company in Kewanee, Illinois and served as a flagship of the Fifth Fleet during World War I and World War II. The USS Kewanee was eventually sold to Japan in 1945 and operated as a training ship before being scrapped in 1957. The USS Kewanee is one of only five battleships ever built by the Bethlehem Steel Company. She was launched on December 15, 1912, and commissioned on February 9, 1915. The USS Kewanee played an important role during World War I, serving as flagship of the Fifth Fleet. After her combat mission with the Fifth Fleet, she served as Training Ship USNS Halsey until she was sold to Japan in 1945. During World War II, the USS Kewanee played an important role both afloat and ashore. She became famous for her role in Leyte Gulf where she helped lead several engagements against Japanese forces. In addition to her military duties, she also acted as a training ship for naval officers during World War II. After her war services were complete, she was decommissioned and scrapped at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Virginia in 1957.
Kewanee is a small town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,612 at the 2010 census. Kewanee was originally one of two settlements on the west side of the Kaskaskia River where it enters Illinois from Missouri. The other settlement was Ottumwa. Kewanee's first settler, John Goudreau, erected a log cabin in 1824. In 1830, he and his wife Prudence founded the first school in Kewanee Township. A Methodist church was also built soon after. In 1836, Samuel Kirkwood purchased land east of present-day Kewanee and erected a farmstead that became known as Kirkwood Grove. In 1840, he partnered with George Gardner to create the first general store in Kane County – located on what is now State Street near Interstate 46 – which continues to be run by their descendants to this day. In 1849–1850, Daniel Freeman opened a bakery in what is now downtown Kewanee and began selling bread made from wheat that had been ground into flour by his father-in-law Isaac Foster (a pioneer farmer from Carpentersville). By 1860, there were six bakeries operating in Kane County alone; three of these were within five miles of each other! Baking powder arrived in Kane County during this time too: early settlers found shiploads of it arriving at Chicago through the port of Liverpool en route to make way for goods destined for Mexico City and its then colony of Texas (which later became Arizona). When demand for baking powder increased following America's Civil War victory over Northern Union forces under General Ulysses S Grant (and consequent Reconstruction), several bakers switched to making this product instead of flour because they could earn more money doing this typeOf work than with baking flour! This trend continued until about 1920 when baking Powder production switched back to using flour as the main input due to rising costs associated with processing new technology such as automatics (Shaw & Company)….

Kewanee was founded in 1839 by John W. Kewanee and his brother, James Kewanee. The town was named after the confluence of the Kawabasca and Kekapuka Rivers. In 1842, the town was renamed again to honor General George Washington Custer because he had fought in the Mexican-American War. The towns growth continued during the years following World War I with a population of around 2,500 residents. However, due to overpopulation and changes in technology, Kewanee’s population dwindled to fewer than 100 residents by the early 21st century. Today, Kewanee is a small community located within north central Illinois that retains some trace of its original pioneer culture and history. The primary focus of KEWANEE’S economy is agriculture with many businesses based in or related to agriculture such as agricultural produce stores, hog farms and corn mills; however, there are also several small businesses located throughout the community that provide essential services such as healthcare and retail services. The town has a rich history dating back to 1839 which can be seen through its founders' decisions about how it should be built - its layout reflects this history with streets running perpendicular to each other instead of turning at right angles like most townships were then constructed. Additionally, many buildings from the early days still remain including what is now known as John W.Kevanees Store which served as one of KEWANEE's first business ventures (it opened in 1841).
