Kewanee is a small town in Illinois, United States. The population was 9,569 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kane County. Kewanee was founded in 1854 byodus settlers from what is now Holland, Michigan. The name "Kewanee" means "place where the Chickasaws gathered." The town was incorporated on March 1, 1875 and named after John C. Ketchum, an early settler who donated land to the town and also donation of $1,000 to help finance its construction. Ketchum had come to America in 1814 as part of a group of Muskegon traders seeking passage to California. He settled in Wayne County near present-day Chicago and became one of the first residents of Kane County. In 1902, Kewanee added a post office and began receiving mail from all over Illinois including Milwaukee (now Racine), Butler (now Joliet), DeKalb (now Dixon), Lake Forest (now Oak Lawn), Peoria (now Carbondale), Rockford (now Rockford Hills), and Woodstock (now Winnetka). In 1925, the Post Office moved from Clintonville to its current location on Main Street east of downtown due to growing postal services demands in that community as well as other growing towns such as Aurora and Schaumburg within Kane County.
