The first Europeans to visit Kewanee were French missionaries in the early 18th century. A wagon train of several hundred pioneers from Illinois en route to the Kansas Territory passed through Kewanee on their way south in 1846. They built a log cabin and stocked up on supplies before continuing on their journey.
In 1858, John P. Beasley, an American fur trader who had settled in what is now Douglas County, Indiana began trading with the Choctaw Nation and Indian traders living along the Missouri River valley. He realized that his trade opportunities were limited if he did not reach the river's mouth near Chicago because there would be no other market for his goods. Beasley established himself as a grazer and commercial farmer in what is now Kewanee Township (now Griggs) after purchasing land east of present-day Wabash Avenue and north of present-day State Street in what is now Douglas County.
Beasley soon became known as "theFather of Kewanee." In 1865, he donated land east of Wabash Avenue to build a Catholic church which became known as Our Lady of Victory Basilica and still stands today within walking distance of downtown Kewanee. The town's first store opened its doors in 1870 - one block south of Main Street between Third and Fourth streets - serving settlers and visitors alike until it closed its doors in 1938 due to economic difficulties brought about by World War II.
In 1906, Beasley donated another two tracts of land west of Wabash Avenue to establish Park Boulevard which served as a connector between Griggs Township (northwest corner), Park View Township (southwest corner), Waukegan Township (east corner), Bloomington Heights Township (northeast corner), Chicago Heights Township ( southeast corner) and Evanston Township (northwest corner). In 1916 Beasley donated $10,000 towards construction of Lake Michigan University which was eventually built adjacent to his original donation comprising 350 acres along with over 1 mile wide channel that led into the lake bed making it one continuous water feature. By 1920 Kewanee had more than 100 businesses including four banks. In 1926 Donny & Marie O'Neill founded The Donnellys Pub & Grill where they have been serving beer since 1950
In 1936 Jack Fitzpatrick opened Fitzpatrick's Pizza which remains open today
