The Coast Guard gift history in Kewanee, Illinois goes back to the late 1800s. The first Coast Guard Station was established in 1872 at what is now known as the Kewanee Naval Shipyard. The station helped support and promote maritime trade and security along the Great Lakes region. During World War II, the Coast Guard doubled its manpower and moved from coastal stations to larger centers in Michigan and Illinois. In 1948, the Coast Guard Chapel was built on Governors Island in New York City as a memorial to Coast Guards who had served during World War II. With the passage of the National Defense Authorization Act of 1946, Congress authorized federal funding for inland Stations similar to those located on coastal areas of America. The first inland Station was opened in Kewaneeh in 1949. This Station supported operations along the Mississippi River corridor and contributed significantly to national security by providing search-and-rescue services during Flooding events such as Hurricane Betsy. In 1957, a new Headquarters Building was completed at Pierrepont Harbor in New York City which became home to both Headquarters staff and Headquarters Squadronrons (one squadron per port). It also housed Air Traffic Control equipment used by both Customs Service airports and United States Airways Flight Service facilities ashore throughout New York City; this facility remains active today as part of Terminal 5 at JFK Airport. As oceanography began becoming an important aspect of Coast Guard missions, new Headquarters Buildings were constructed at Point Lookout NM (1962), Miami Beach FL (1965) and White Sands NM (1969). These headquarters complexes provided comprehensive commandeered space including laboratories capable of conducting research into natural hazards such as hurricanes, earthquakes or tidal waves while accommodating up to 350 Board Members with their individual offices, workshops, library/spaces for music performance etc.; these Facilities continue extant today as part of Northeast Region headquarters Complexes I – III located at Dover AFB The Commissioned Officer program has been integral within CoastGuard Command since it inception; through this program officers are selected from enlisted men who have passed a rigorous selection process that includes basic training followed by probationary service period accompanied by successful completion of officer candidate school where they attend lectures/ Seminars on leadership issues+ field experience with various command elements+ time spent performing duties under direct orders from Commandant/ Rear Adm./ Commander= selections made from among Enlisted Men who have met all qualifications set forth thereby affording commissioned officers excellent opportunity for personal growth

The Coast Guard Auxiliary in Kewanee, Illinois was organized on December 15, 1941 and began operations on January 1, 1942. The Coast Guard Auxiliary is the state’s primary volunteer emergency response force for coastal communities along the Great Lakes region.
Kewanee is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 12,569 at the 2010 census. Kewanee is the county seat of Cook County andhome to Northwestern Illinois University. The first settler in what is now Kewanee was Amos Kendall in 1837. A post office called Kendall was established in 1841, and remained open until 1893. In 1864, the town of Kewanee was platted and named after General John Buel Kewanee who had been wounded at the Battle of Pea Ridge (1861). The original schoolhouse still stands today on Main Street near where it once stood as an Athenaeum Theatre. After years of growth and development, by 1920 Kewanee had a population of over 40 people and began to build its own water system which still serves today. An important event that took place during this time was when the Chicago White Sox were founded there in 1916 by Dutch Schultz. In 1924, basketball became an official sport at Northwestern Illinois University with the arrival of Mr.. Red Cloud from Wichita Falls Texas as head coach; he would lead NIU to three NCAA championships between 1932-1935 KEWANEE – ITS HISTORY In 1840 Amos Kendall settled on section 6th east of present day North High Road just south of Cairo Road where he farmed for about ten years before moving downriver to what is now Maple Grove Township on section 7th west side Old Wabash Rd just east of present day Sycamore Rd It should be noted that while Kendall did settle hereabouts his family name may have been spelled "Kendall" or "Kennedy". It's not clear why one spelling prevailed over another but evidence suggests that they either chose this name because it sounded more like General John Booth's old unit (the 1st Illini Infantry), or they simply liked it better than their other options - one being "Booth" which also happened to be spelled "Boul." Orion Baird moved into Section 6th East about 1850 from upstate New York & started homesteading thereabout 1865 along with 4 brothers: Alexander Baird (born 1860), Asher Baird (born 1862), David Baird (born 1865) & Solomon Baird (born 1870). They kept cutting wood for their fireplaces & selling it off until about 1890 when abundant lumber became available due mainly to construction work going on along I-80 & coming through town square Another early settler also arrived around this time named George Schieffer from Kentucky who lived alone on a farm northeast corner Oak Hollow Road/Highlands Dr just north ofpresent day White Sands Rd before moving west overland into what is now Park Ave following Indian Creek all the way up stream some 10 miles SOUTH OF NOWHERE .& later settling near Waterloo under Abram Ruby . Another early settler mentioned above named James Hickey arrived around 1876 after leaving Greencastle KY behind during war with Mexico

In 1951, the Coast Guard became an autonomous branch of the Department of Homeland Security and today continues to provide essential security for America's ports, coasts, waterways and airfields. Today's coast guard gift history can be traced back to when first responders were called out during World War I. Many members of the United States military were drafted into service and needed supplies such as food, clothing, ammunition, etc., so local businesses donated these items to help war veterans. The tradition continued after World War II when donations started coming in from civilians all over the country. The Coast Guard also received assistance from private donors in order to keep coastal communities safe during hurricanes such as Katrina or Rita in 2005. In 2013 alone, the Coast Guard received more than $1 million in gifts! The town was named after John Kewanee, who donated land to the town in 1837. The first school in Kewanee opened in 1841. The first post office was established in 1840. Kewanee is home to the KEWANEE VALLEY COLLEGE, one of two institutions of higher education within Cook County, Illinois. The local economy revolves around agriculture and manufacturing. Many businesses operate out of Kewanee, including Pinnacle Grain Elevator and American Can Co., both of which are still operational today. Other businesses include Saginaw-based D&D Foods, which produces ice cream for various brands; and Ford Motor Company plants located at Waukegan and South Elgin Township, respectively.
The Kewanee, Illinois town was founded in 1836 by Anthony and Rebecca Cook. The first post office was established in 1839. In 1846, the town became a village. In 1861, the village was merged into the city of Kewanee. On February 17, 1906, the city of Kewanee was merged into the new town of McLean.
