The Kewanee Army Depot was founded in 1916 as the first United StatesArmy ammunition depot. The depot serviced artillery and cavalry units during World War I and II. In 1957, the army merged with the Air Force to form the USAF. The Kewanee ammo depot closed in 1965 but was reopened in 1978 as part of a larger Ammo Storage and Distribution Center complex that included two other arsenals, one at Springfield, Illinois and one at El Paso, Texas. Today, the KEWANEE ARMY DOCKET is home to over 350 military organizations from 45 countries who use our stockpile of munitions for their individual needs. Our diverse munitions arsenal includes ordnance for both air and land forces; missile systems; artillery projectiles; ammunition for air-to-ground missiles; armored personnel carriers and tanks; watercraft; night fighting gear; medical supplies; construction materials and more. Ammunition has been an important part of American history since before independence. Today's military relies on ammunition to support Operation Desert Storm in Saudi Arabia in 1990 or Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan today!

The Kewanee Legion was an American military unit that served in the Union army during the American Civil War. The unit was organized on December 12, 1861, at a camp near Kewanee, Illinois. The regiment was raised to a full battalion on February 7, 1862 and took its first steps into battle on March 6th against Confederate forces under General Robert E. Lee. The Kewanee Legion fought until 1865 and participated in most of the major engagements of the war including Vicksburg, Corinth, Missionary Ridge and Appomattox Court House. In total there were over 2,000 men killed or died from wounds or disease while serving with the legion.

With growing industrial activity in nearby Cook County during the late 19th century, Yonge Street became one of Chicago's premier business streets and many large factories were built there; however, with economic decline starting in World War II and suburbanization following World War II, Kewanee lost some of its key industry (including several major companies) while other parts of downtown experienced growth. In recent years, efforts have been made to revive downtown Kewanee by creating new businesses and redeveloping old buildings into apartments or condos; however, progress has been slow due to lack of funding from local government coffers coupled with challenges from developers who argue that downtown should be spruced up rather than left abandoned. Despite these difficulties, redevelopment is ongoing; nonetheless Downtown still features boarded-up storefronts and an abandonment rate much higher than other parts of town – largely because few people care about it anymore despite once being vibrantwith nightlife optionsand high-end retail space

The community was first platted on the east side of the Kewanee River. It first became an agricultural center due to its location near water supplies and its fertile soil. The town developed into a commercial center after railroads arrived in the area in the late 19th century. In recent years, Kewanee has experienced growth as a bedroom community for Chicago.
