Kankakee is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 26,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first post office was established in 1841 at what is now Old Kankakee Village on the east side of the river between First and Second Streets; it served as a stop on stagecoaches travelling between Chicago and Quincy, Illinois. During World War II many factories turned to manufacturing munitions here due to proximity to military plants across town such as General Dynamics Electric Boat Corporation's shipyards at Fox Point Naval Shipyard (now known as Huntington Ingalls Industries) and Westinghouse Electric Corporation's plant at Mount Carmel Arsenal (now Lake Orion Power).
