Kankakee, Illinois is a small town in the northwest corner of Illinois. The population was 5,856 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is the northernmost town in Chicagoland. The Kankakee area has been inhabited by the Potawatomi since 1811. In 1868, a post office was established at Kankakee and it remained in operation until 1903. The first white settler in what is now Kankakee Township was George Washington Ford on December 8, 1830 (age 26). He purchased 4 acres of land from Chief Joseph Boggs for $60. Ford built a cabin on his property which he named "Ford's Camp." The first school in Kankakee Township was opened in1872 by Mrs. Auld with 11 students. The town was originally named "Hinckley" after Captain John Hinckley who led the first party of white settlers to explore the area in 1837. After some confusion, Kankakee was renamed "Kankakee" on October 12th, 1839. The history of Kankakee begins with early pioneers who journeyed through this area during the 1830s and 40s looking for new land to settle. In 1837, Captain John Hinckley and his group of seven other settlers set out from Humboldt County, Wisconsin on a quest to find new land in Illinois. They traveled northwest until they reached what is now Kankakee Township. While exploring the area, Hinckley met Native American tribes who told him about an ancient civilization that lived near present-day Kankakee. He convinced his fellow colonists to continue their journey and travel into Indian Territory to investigate what they were talking about. Upon arrival at Fort Dearborn (later known as Prairie du Chien), Hinckley learned that he had found what he thought were ruins of an ancient city which he named Hinckley after himself - an event which helped spread knowledge about the city around Kankakee throughout the years. When Captain John Hinckley arrived in Kankakee Township he discovered that there were already people living here - French Canadian traders and farmers who had started arriving here in early 1840. By late 1840, however, there were only a few hundred people living here scattered among several villages along the Mississippi River Valley including Chicago and Decatur (now Bloomington). The first permanent resident of Kankakee was Pierre-Antoine Lafitte who moved from Canada with his family in early 1840 along with many other French Canadian entrepreneurs intent on starting a fur trade empire in Illinois’ interior regions。 In 1841 Lafitte built a log cabin on top of an old quarry overlooking today’s downtown district which became known as “Lafitte’s Landing” ().
